From pumpkin picking to horseback riding, read on to discover the best ways to spend a crisp fall day in the beautiful Littleton, Colorado area.
Get Lost in a Corn Maze
If your perfect fall afternoon involves exploring a maze of swaying corn stalks or chowing down on kettle corn, you’re in luck! The annual corn maze at the Denver Botanical Gardens’ Chatfield Farms location returns this year, running Fridays through Sundays from September 16 through October 30. This year’s seven-acre maze has a dinosaur and prehistoric theme, perfect to spark your kids’ imaginations. Little ones will love the mini-maze and barrel train rides, while adults and kids alike can snack on their favorite festival snacks like roasted nuts, funnel cake, kettle corn, and much more. Eat food from farm vendors or bring your own lunch to enjoy at the picnic tables onsite. Tickets must be purchased in advance online, so be sure to secure your spot early.
Take a Horseback Ride
Less than half a mile from your door lies Chatfield Stables, where you can indulge your equestrian side through horseback rides and lessons. You’ll feel like a real Western pioneer atop one of the stable’s many horses — which you can even “meet” online prior to your ride! Trail rides range from a short one-hour trot to a five-hour trek through Waterton Canyon. Kids aged seven and up can ride one of the larger horses, while kids under seven will gallop atop smaller ponies. Chatfield Stables encourages reserving your ride ahead of time, which you can do by calling (303)-933-3636.
Pick a Pumpkin
The leaves are changing, the nights are getting colder, and that means Halloween will be here before we know it. Want to stay ahead of the curve? Get your pumpkin early and enjoy some local history at the Littleton Harvest Festival on October 8 from 10am-3pm. The Harvest Festival is held at the Littleton Museum grounds, where attendees can see local history come alive with an 1890s carnival, wagon rides, an oddities tent, and autumn-themed photo stations. Admission to the festival is free but remember to bring a bag or wagon — those pumpkins can be heavy!
Peep Changing Leaves Along the Water
The High Line Canal — which runs through Solstice™ — has endless options for leaf-spotting and recreation. Just north of Chatfield State Park, you’ll find the Mary Carter Greenway Trail along the sun-dappled South Platte River. The Greenway Trail runs eight miles along the South Platte and is open to walking, biking, strollers, and more. Check out the public art placed alongside the trail and stop off at the Hudson Gardens and Event Center, where garden beds burst with flowers and a model railroad runs from 10am-2pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Along both trails, keep your eyes peeled for changing fall leaves on quaking aspens, cottonwoods, and scrub oaks.
